Bimatoprost Side Effect Used for Eyelash Extension: Latisse

October 24th, 2009 hair extensions No comments

In the medical field, bimatoprost has been used to help control the progression of glaucoma and manage ocular hypertension.  It is also used to reduce intraocular pressure.  But one of the known side effects of bimatoprost is it uncanny ability to lengthen eyelash hair.  As of December 2008 bimatoprost has been approved by the FDA to be a safe to use product for eyelash lengthening and being sold under the product name Latisse by Allergan.  This is not the first product in the market where its side effect is used for beneficial purposes.

Products used specifically for their side effect properties is not unusual in the medical field although it may seem strange that a product be used for those properties.  Minoxidil is another example of a drug side effect being put to good use. Minoxidil was originally designed as a blood pressure medication but as a result of its use,  re-growth of hair was the side effect documented.  Minoxidil is the active drug in Rogaine topical hair regrowth system and is also an FDA approved product for the treatment and prevention of hair loss.

People who have short or thinning eyelashes are great candidates for Latisse eyelash extender product in contrast to patients requiring eyelash restoration through hair transplant.  Latisse is highly recommended for fuller and longer eyelashes.  Eyelash hair restoration is generally done through surgery using scalp hair and implanted in the eyelash area.  The best candidates for eyelash restoration are people who do not have any eyelashes on all or part of their eyelashes.
